Ceramic vase, 'Ancestral Wilderness'

Unfurling petals with grace and elegance, white flowers adorn this vase in the tradition of Sawankaloke. Crafted of ceramic, the piece reveals Kittikorn's artistic talent.

Kittikorn uses modern-day kilns and tools to recreate the ceramic artistry made famous by Sawankaloke artisans since the 12th century, in central Thailand. They used special kilns that were partially underground and reached such high temperatures it took days before the items had cooled enough for the artisans to handle. Kittikorn works with local clays and after hand-painting the items, he uses a glaze of feldspar and longan wood ashes dissolved in water.

"Hello, I'm Kittikorn Kanjanakuha. I'm son of Uthai Kanjanakuha, also a Novica featured artist. His work represents the rich artistry of Thailand, and now it's my turn to inherit this type work from him.

"I was born March 28, 1978 and I completed high school in my hometown. After studying university in Thailand, I went to Australia, where I graduated with a Master's degree in Economics. When I was there, I took a part-time job as a waiter in a Thai restaurant, which enabled me to meet a lot of people and learn all about them. It was a great experience.

"I returned to Thailand in 2003 and decided to work for my father at his workshop. I preferred to work for him rather than for somebody else because it is run by the family and I can acquire experience at every stage of production.

"I've had to learn every aspect of the method. For me it's been a great challenge! I love to design and create more and more new styles that can be developed into actual products. My work has a distinct style and it's completely hand-crafted."
