"My biggest dream is for people to like and admire the work of a small artist such as me."
"I'm Ketut Widana, from Ubud district, Gianyar regency, Bali. I learned making art works, especially sculptures, from my family; most of them worked as wood carvers. My village, Peliatan, is known for its famous wood carvers.
"When I was still in elementary school I was very interested in art, so I started carving very simple forms such as fruits. Then I started to think that I must improve my knowledge and my talent, so I tried carving animal figurines with more complex materials, shapes and finishes. I learned by observing and asking other master carvers in my village.
"It took me almost ten years to learn to carve animal sculptures, and when I thought it was time, I began to sell them. However, there were financial problems and I realized I had to work with other themes too. That's when I began to carve replicas of antique or traditional pieces. Now I specialize in both and I am doing well, so I'm happy I made that decision! My biggest dream is for people to like and admire the work of a small artist such as me."
