Blas Ponce Manrique, born in Huancayo, 1927, specializes in woodwork. From his expert hands comes beautiful tableware with an artistic touch that is distinctly his own. With skillful hands and imaginative vision he reveals the inner beauty of wood and displays it for all to see.
"I started in the arts and crafts world when I was thirteen years old doing silversmith work in my hometown of San Jerónimo. When I was young I dedicated myself to studying at a state funded polytechnic institute specializing in arts and crafts trades in the capital, Lima. It was there that I learned the art of woodworking, and over time I worked to perfect my craft, always persevering with a sense of enthusiasm. I am one of the few woodworkers who works with olive wood, as it is a classic wood.
"My work basically consists of first locating the correct section of wood, then machine working the trunk section to obtain a basic form. Then with tools such as the chisel I carve and finish the piece, eventually applying a coat of varnish to protect the wood and accentuate its natural color tones."
Blas Ponce, from a novice silversmith to a master craftsman of the finest olive wood, has found a road to continue with his art.
