Javier Castillo was born December 3, 1954 and moved to Lima to attend high school. He graduated from college with a degree in industrial arts and began to work in ceramics while still a university student. After graduation, he taught ceramics in an occupational center and, at the age of 25, opened a workshop in his home.
Castillo participated in international arts and crafts fairs and, in one of these, he also showed items of painted glass along with his ceramics. Impressed with their success, he added works in glass to his ceramics repertoire. He paints the intricate designs on the reverse side of glass panes, which are inlaid on a carved wood backing and adorned with golden or silvery
purpurina.
Rosa, his wife of 15 years, helps him in the workshop. The couple has three children.
"Although I enjoy ceramics, I find I personally prefer painting on glass," Castillo confides. "Thank you for inviting our products into your homes. You'll find that each one comes from the heart of an artisan."
