Wood relief panel, 'Little Giant'

With his bushy eyebrows and curving fangs, Yak is a fanciful presence. Pornsawan depicts the giant Yak, from the Sanskrit epic Ramayana. The giant was a soldier in King Rahwana's army and kidnapped Princess Sita. With its long teeth, the titanic ogre appears in many Thai stories; his favorite food is human flesh.

Pornsawan joins rain tree wood to form a single panel.

Pornsawan

"Sawasdee ka. My name is Pornsawan Laedeke, or you can use my nickname 'Yui.' My name means 'Divine Gift' in the Thai language. I was born on November 30, 1979 in a very small town. I had to go to another district for high school. Afterward, I had no budget for college. I was very interested in arts and crafts because my village has many wood carvers who work from their homes. But I moved to the city where my older sister had a shop.

"Although I was just 17, she taught me about business and designing. The work was very hard but I was happy to do it. At the shop one day, I met an American man who lived in the area. His name is Spencer LaDegree and we eventually married. He encouraged me to learn more about painting and wood carving.

"When I was pregnant with my first child, we moved to the United States, but then we came back to Thailand and started a wood carving workshop. Here I can use my skill in painting, carving and design; the actual production of the more elaborate pieces I leave to a group of men who are very experienced carvers. Almost all my work is based on Thai culture and religion.

"We now have three children – Ked, Dreg and Lila. The warmth of my family inspires me in my life and work. Novica is the best way to show our art to the world. Thanks to all you kind people."
