Wood mask, 'The Deity'

Strong and serene, this image of Ganesha captures the deity's kind nature. He is regarded as the Lord of Knowledge, and he is endowed with the power to keep under control the occult forces that bring disaster upon humankind. Son of Siwa and Durga, two of the most powerful deities within the realm of Hindu belief, Ganesha has the head of an elephant and a human body. Prithvi Raj Kumawat hand-carves this mask from kadam wood with sublime detail, for Ganesha's every feature holds symbolic meaning.

Ganesha's large elephant head signifies wisdom, understanding, and the intelligence to discern right from wrong. His wide mouth symbolizes the natural human desire to enjoy life. Ganesha's large ears signify that a perfect person is one who possesses the capacity to listen to others and assimilate ideas. The trunk symbolizes the mind's strength in withstanding life's ups and downs, yet delicate enough to be capable of introspection - just like an elephant's trunk can down trees yet also lift a needle off the ground.

Features an iron loop for hanging.

Kumawat

"Hi everyone, my name is Prithvi Raj Kumawat and I was born on August 14, 1964. I began to train in the art of crafts when I was ten years old. My parents were financially unable to support my studies so I had to earn money myself to provide for my education. So, while I was training, I studied. I never intended to end up in this profession of crafting, but I had no other choice. However, today I realize this is what destiny had in store for me.

"For fifteen long years I was trained by my cousin, Chhote Lal Kumawat. During this time as a trainee I really learned and understood the art of crafting. By 1983, I was able to work independently. My line of products includes all types of wooden handicrafts, but my specialty is Natraj, as well as other Hindu deities.

"I am proud to say, my effort and hard work eventually paid off, and in 1986 I was honored with the Rajasthan State Award. I have also participated in numerous exhibitions in and around the country. In 1998 and 1999, I was honored to participate in the Dubai Shopping Festivial, which is regarded as a prestigious event.

"It's good to be associated with Novica. Through Novica I'm already getting good responses from art lovers across the globe. Each purchase motivates me and encourages me to present the finest quality."
