Repousse panel, 'Elephants in the Forest'

Thronging the rainforest, elephants of all ages forage for food, rest or simply socialize. Linked to Thailand for millennia, elephants were the mounts of kings and nobility. They worked tirelessly in the lumber industry, pushing heavy logs of precious tropical hardwood with trunks and tusks. Commemorated in art and architecture, the elephant is respected and admired. Thiva Boonnak portrays them in glowing repoussé. She applies pitch to a sheet of aluminum and embosses the motifs by hand. Once the work is engraved, she heats the sheet to remove the pitch and plunges it into a bath of boiling acid. She then washes it in a tamarind fruit solution and polishes it. The repoussé panel is affixed to a panel of rain tree wood.

Thiva Boonnak speaks reflectively of her art amidst the scattered tools and the pieces in progress that fill her family's old-fashioned workshop.

"Our region's designs are all special. Each one is unique and grandiose." Her soft words echo the proud sentiments passed on by her family generations before her.

Thiva Boonnak tells how her father taught her and her brothers the silversmith craft, and how he showed them not only the technical, intricate skills, but also transmitted the smith's labor of love.
