'Dewi Saraswati,' statuette

Saraswati rides her swan in majestic splendor to remind all of knowledge's gracious blessings. Nyoman Suwita invokes her presence with rich hand-carved artistry intent on honoring the Goddess accredited with the source of knowledge. Carved from suar wood, she is perched upon a lotus flower pedestal as she casts a knowing glance to adorn an esthetic setting.

Dewi Saraswati is a beautiful and gracious Goddess personifying all knowledge. In her four arms she holds a chain (symbol of eternal knowledge), a lontar or palm book (symbol of the accumulation of knowledge), a lotus flower (as a symbol of beauty an purity) and a rebab violin (to symbolize science and culture). Tradition portrays her riding a swan as a symbol of prudence and the ability to distinguish right from wrong just like a swan is able to distinguish water from mud.
