Bronze sculpture, 'Kinabalu, the Dragon'

Kinabalu, the dragon from Borneo, clutches a precious pearl in a bronze sculpture by Sukaenah. Legend tells how Kinabalu guarded a precious pearl, desired by a Chinese emperor, who sent Wee Ping and Wee San to retrieve it.

Wee San decided to wait for the dragon to leave, and replace the pearl with a look alike. However, the dragon was not fooled and went after the brothers, who were now on their ship. As the dragon approached, Wee San ordered the cannon to be fired at him. Kinabalu, thinking it was his precious pearl, swallowed the cannon ball and died.

Wee Ping felt left out of the whole adventure and took credit for the idea, claiming that he, not his brother, managed to steal it from the dragon. Wee San wanted no more trouble over the silly pearl, so he said nothing, left China, and eventually became the happy leader of the Brunei. Wee Ping was not so lucky, for his lies brought him nothing but sorrow.

Sukaenah's vivid dragon sculpture features an antique finish.

Sukaenah

Sukaenah was born on July 4, 1978. As a child, she loved to climb a big tree in her garden. From there she could jump onto the roof of her family's house. Her favorite rooftop spot was nicely shaded, and it soon became her personal hideout where she would go to read or study.

During her high school years, Sukaenah was very active in different school organizations as well as sporting events - she was a long-distance runner. She also joined the Paskibra, a group responsible for hanging the national flag on Indonesia's Day of Independence.

Unable to fulfill her lifelong ambition of studying at a government university, Sukaenah decided to enroll in a four-year course at a local tourism school. She majored in hotel management, and during her second year of studies she was selected to become a trainee in Singapore.

Sukaenah graduated in 2000 and took a job at an important hotel. "Here I first came into contact with traditional bronze artwork," she says. "I fell in love with it. In my eyes, these sculptures looked different, antique, and charismatic." Sukaenah searched for information on bronze sculpting, which made her appreciate this art form even more.

Encouraged by her brother-in-law, Sukaenah decided to work with bronze. Together, they began to create a variety of art works, but their favorites are characters with strong historical and religious backgrounds, such as Shiva, Krishna, and Buddha.

"Working with bronze in a historical context has challenged me to learn more about history and culture, which I greatly enjoy," the artist confides.
