Born to Chinese parents on Bintan Island, Indonesia, Budiman originally studied interior design in Jakarta before venturing into handicrafts in 2000, at the age of 24.
The concept behind his designs came from the realization that the rich tradition of Indonesian craftsmanship could be used in modern way to create simple yet contemporary items with an Asian touch. As a result, every single design is handmade using Indonesian resources and traditional craft techniques such as leaf weaving, stone and wood carving, or simply traditional fabric weaving.
"One of my favorite designs is my incense gift box," Budiman says. "From the choice of paper, the size of the box, the calligraphy, color and perfume of the incense, to the design and material of the incense holder, nothing is left to chance. I rely on my own creativity as well as that of local craftspeople with whom I collaborate.
"I am now working with home accessories, based on the same philosophy. We create candleholders, place mats, various table top accessories, novel containers and boxes and even picture frames. My accent is on personalization, and my artistic signature is Léollé."
