Carlos Cabral

"Hola! My name is Carlos Cabral. When I was studying medicine, I came to realize that what I really enjoyed the most was designing. So, after graduating in Design, I worked in graphic communications for over 20 years designing jewelry on the side, until I realized my greatest pleasure came from three dimensional shapes as well as working with metals and gemstones.

"When I was living in Chiapas [southern Mexico] I fell under the charm of amber and became fascinated with its secrets. I lived among jewelers and amber specialists, who taught me how to cut and shape the capricious lines of amber. They also taught me how to set it so it became a proper item of jewelry.

"I studied a variety of courses in jewelry design and silversmith in order to discover the intricacies of metal work. I learned how to work metals without hurrying the process – I learned to listen to metal. I also learned to combine metals with gems and bring out their beauty in unison. Now I derive great pleasure when I see people wearing my designs and see them happy with my products.

"My inspiration comes from that which is organic. Nature is the guiding principle behind my designs. I observe flowers and feathers. I analyze the contours of a rock or a tree trunk's texture. I pay attention to basic, naïve elements that possess a limpid elegance, soft lines and corporeal structures.

"Rather than imitate, I'd say my designs emulate Mother Nature – wise teacher that she is. The names of my collections reflect their essence and principle: they are like they are - they are what they are.

"When I work with metals I use a variety of techniques to create different shapes and effects, including repoussé, hammering, high relief, sinclastic and anticlastic raising, etc. I incorporate different gems and crystals as natural companions to metal.

"The finished product is an item of jewelry that can be felt - one that people can identify with."
