Steel wire mask, 'Fears'

Wide eyes and a startled expression characterize this original mask by Fabio Silveira. He calls this piece Akua-Uoma, which in Kimbundo language of Angola refers to the fears a human might have. The Brazilian artist hand-crafts this mask, giving it a distinct personality as he twists galvanized steel wire into shape.

"Ever since I can remember, I've always had an interest in art. I remember fondly the childhood plays for which I designed and made the props. To me, it was like a type of game through which I could express my creativity. At the time, I was only nine years old.

"I grew up in an environment surrounded by intellectuals. My mother was an educator, my father a geologist and my older brother was an artist who also made sets. They all encouraged me to pursue my own talent, that of crafting tiny papier-mâché sculptures and knitted dolls. All in all, it was the ideal environment in which to bring up a potential artist.

"When I was 15 years old I started working as stagehand for theatrical and cinematic productions. This job became my source of income even when I was a university student. I became the advisor to the architecture students because of the job I had. I learned a lot and I was able to develop my talent for creating all types of ambiances. It also gave me a sense of discipline, which is vital in any artistic profession. It was during that time that I started to work with wire to create all forms of scenic props.

"Now I'm concentrating on this new project, which consists of the replication of African masks by blending the works of Mondrian and Alexander Calder. My masks tend to be regularly used on the stage of different Brazilian theatrical and cinematic productions. Now through Novica, it's the world's turn to meet my work.”
