Efren Canteras

"I'm Efren Canteras. Blowing glass is a trade that I consider extremely beautiful. I love blown glass because of the pure imagination poured into every piece created."

The art of blown glass came to Mexico from Spain during the colonization. Efren transformed this age-old art into his own personal passion, and the dedication, creativity, and talent that he brings to the fire are absolutely unique. Amidst the intense heat of his workshop, precision is of utmost importance.

"When I was 15 years old, I began blowing glass. I have spent the last 32 years of my life mastering the art. During 14 of those years, I also worked to teach the art of blowing hot glass to other young artisans. I start by employing people as my assistants, but I aim to train them to be experts, glass-blowers equipped with a beautiful and useful skill."

Surrounded by various tools and bending over a scorching flame, Efren gracefully demonstrates his skill and expertise in every step of his creative process, including timing, pressure, touch and heat. He glides from the hot fire to his workbench and juggles all kinds of shaping tools to complete his works of art.
