Wool tapestry, 'Gardeners'

Teodolo Ulloa takes his inspiration from the so-called "Valley of the Flowers" in Tarma. Working in wool, he depicts a group of women who work in the vast gardens there and sell fresh cut flowers to passersby. Wide brimmed hats shade them from the sun, while warm shawls protect them from the chilly air at nearly 10,000 feet above sea level.

Titled "Las jardineras" in Spanish.

Teodolo Ulloa

Teodolo Ulloa was born 31 August 1968 and he can trace his family's weaving lineage several generations back. He proclaims his pride for Peru and its history through his detailed art.

"I can happily say that I learned to weave when I was only seven years old, just by helping my grandparents as they worked in front of the looms," recalls Teodolo. "I inherited my grandparents' passion for weaving, but I developed my own style. I have always wanted to weave the best tapestries, so I consulted with renowned weavers of the region and I learned all I could from them. They guided me and helped me to improve and refine my technique.

"I am one of the elder siblings, and my brother Raúl Ulloa is already a Novica featured artist. We learned side by side, although we developed different styles.

"I have promoted my work through several exhibitions and fairs, and I have collaborated with a Spanish NGO. In March of 2005, I got First Place at the 1st Loomed Tapestry Competition, which was organized for the '2nd Tourist Encounter of San Pedro de las Cajas and its Traditions.'

"I describe my style as Cubist, and its my way of expressing the way we live, fish, work the land, etc. Through my art, every wool thread and each color carries with it my life, and that of my village."
