Wood bowl, 'Paradise Lotus'

Symbol of purity and insight, a lotus takes shape from richly-grained rain tree wood, lovingly carved and polished. Chuchat Suwut sculpts a delightful bowl with matching lid, and frames the piece with petals. The blossom, known as a dawk-bua, represents Buddha's doctrine. Chuchat Suwut

"I'm Chuchat Suwut, and my nickname is 'Joy.' I was born October 13, 1976. My parents have their own business and I have one sister who is a university student. We still live together and everyday we talk about each other's lives and help each other when a problem occurs. I love the relations among Thai people. I could absolutely feel it when I went away to college in Japan. If we have a problem, we always help and encourage one another.

"I'm an active person. As a little boy, I was mischievous but self confident and daring. When I decide to do something, after considering it well, I will try to make it real. In 2001, I graduated with a master's degree in engineering design. But then I decided to commercialize handicrafts, especially the wood carvings that I know best. I'm producer and supplier at the same time. I use my own ideas and refine them until I find the perfect shape, and then I start to make the item.

"My works are inspired by Thai tradition and culture. Every time I present a piece, I explain it in its cultural context. For example, you should not place a Buddha image lower than your waist because Thai people respect these things and always keep the image – and every thing we respect – in a high or overhead position.

"I feel really enthusiastic to show the products I've conceived myself through Novica."
