Peru's textile tradition can be traced back to 8 000 B.C., and the prime materials used then were
cabuya (pita fiber), cotton and wool – the coarser type came from llamas and the finer one from alpacas. By 500 B.C., woven textiles were the norm, and this in turn implied the development of more efficient looms, which produced a tighter and finer weave. Remnants of these textiles can be appreciated in museums throughout Peru.
As weaving became widespread and sophisticated, different techniques developed to produce brocades, tapestries and fine or durable pieces. There also came a need to develop a wider range of colors and thus weavers began to experiment with a variety of herbal infusions. Some of these ancient dye recipes are still used today.
Alpacas, one of the oldest and most numerous inhabitants of the South American continent, produce some of the finest wool in the world. They live in the Andean highlands and provide for many people's subsistence. Thousands of families are devoted to their care, just like they have done for many generations.
Peru's textile industry purchases alpaca wool straight from the farmers who dye and process it. Alpaca wool is versatile, it can be very coarse and it can also be of the finest quality, its preparation depends on the use it will be given.
Peru has been and remains the world's largest producer of alpaca wool clothing and accessories. They come in a variety of styles featuring traditional and more contemporary patterns. Renowned fashion designers around the world continue to include alpaca wool clothing in their collections.
The Novica Alpaca Collection is created to showcase Peru's alpaca wool legacy and features a variety of high quality clothes and accessories. The collection includes the works of expert Peruvian weavers and their original designs while they successfully preserve the spirit of tradition.
