Made Marya

"My name is Made Marya and people call me Marya for short. I was born in Bali on December 28, 1970. I make various kinds of woodworks, most of them are abstract figures. I had no one to guide me in making artworks - all I did was watch people who made them. My village is known throughout the world as a place of wood carvers. This heritage motivates me and has influenced my work.

"When I wake up early in the morning and feel inspired, that is my best time to carve the wood. Since there are many other wood carvers like me, I am very careful with the quality of my products so that my customers won't go to other places. In 1990 I received a certificate as a talented artisan, and in 1992 I exhibited my works in Jakarta."
