Kasarin

"I am Kasarin Krisanamis and I was born in Bangkok in 1968. I grew up in a warm family environment, with two younger brothers. My father is an architect and my mother loved to paint; she taught me about handicrafts and how to draw. I graduated with a bachelor of arts at Chulalongkorn University, and then studied for a diploma in theater design in Nottingham, England. When I returned to Thailand, I began working for a large department store, with the conviction that I would one day be working for myself. Initially, I designed fashions, but later I worked in the display and merchandizing departments.

"While living in England, I noticed beautiful candles being sold practically everywhere. Because of my artistic background, and after serious research and experimentation, I decided to start designing and making my own line of candles. My husband encouraged me, and together we set up our own workshop in 1997.

"I design all our products, and I love the merchandising aspect as well. My previous experience in department stores provided me with a strong background.

"I constantly keep an eye on what is fashionable, through different media, to get ideas and keep updated on what is in vogue.

"I love handcrafted items. Tribal and natural themes are my utmost favorites, and I incorporate them into my designs. My designs consist of a subtle blend of traditional artistry, contemporary trends, and my own personal ideas. Many people have told me they love my candles because of their strength, quality, and beauty. They also say they easily fit with any décor. I have so many designs - there will always be a candle to please every customer!

"I work for myself and I am happy as I am. The greatest part of working for yourself is that it is not a job as such, but a big part of your life. Our workshop is growing slowly and nicely. I want it to grow, but not too much. I do not want to be a millionaire. All I need is enough to earn a living, and to be able to offer work to other people. Being responsible is what matters. Every year, my goal is just to have enough work to offer other people consistent work."
