S. Basuki was born in Magetan, eastern Java in 1955. A talented painter, he prefers non-formal style to trained academic techniques. "Directly applying my skills enriches my work much more than learning theory in school," he says. While working for the World Project of Ancol Fantasy in 1983, he learned art under the guidance of Sudaryono Sudarso, as well as other senior painters in Jakarta. A quick learner, Basuki excels at absorbing the varied wisdom of other painters and transforming it into an original and personal style.
