"I was born in Corinto, a small city in Minas Gerais, called Corinth. This city is the principal center for transparent quartz for whole the state and maybe for the country. I remember that from childhood, my house was full of uncut crystals everywhere, since my grandfather, and later my father, explored a crystal bed on their land. And so this stone became my favorite. What began as child's toy turned into my work today. I remember that I always liked drawing and it was easy for me from the time I was a little girl. I also enjoyed handicrafts and was motivated to do this by the women of my family.

"I had the intention of studying fine arts and moved to Belo Horizonte, the state capital, to attend the university. But I ended up majoring in architecture, a career which did not interest me more, and then I went to work in a state bank. After much coming and going, already married and with three children, I decided to go back to school. I studied fine arts in the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, where I specialized in painting.

"I had several painting exhibitions and, at the same time I made costume jewelry because I felt the need for my daughter and me to wear something different with our own style. Then we had a houseguest visiting from Spain. She saw my jewelry and asked that I create some new pieces so that she could show my work in Barcelona.

"I began to create designs to send her and she sold all of them. My friends at work also began to buy them. Then some shops requested my jewelry to sell. And so it all began in 2002.

"I used a variety of materials – feathers, stones, crystals, leather and nickel-plated metal. However about a year ago I visited a jewelry fair in São Paulo. There was a stand that sold gemstones and I was enchanted. I thought they demanded a nobler metal, and that was when I added silver to my works.

"Nowadays, I like to mix the rustic with the softness of silver, such as my works created from coconut. My process of choosing materials is very interesting. I go everywhere in search of materials and, when I find them, I imagine the finished piece as if it already existed inside me.

"I feel very pleased when I see my work worn by people who appreciate my style. During the periods I wasn't doing any work using my hands and my creativity, I ended up feeling sad, a bit depressed, with an enormous sensation of emptiness and no motivation. For this, I don't consider art as a job, because it give me a great sensation of pleasure, relieving me of stress, of fatigue and of loneliness.

"I gave up painting, not because I disliked it, but because I discovered my true passion in the creation of jewelry. Jewelry has a different kind of beauty, with movement, not like paintings that are static on the wall, no matter how beautiful they may be. Today, I want to take a specialization course in jewelry design and to develop more and more.

"With Novica, my work will be recognized outside Brazil, which is very gratifying. To imagine someone in another country wearing my designs is very flattering; it is a piece of Brazil taken to distant places, cultures and people."
