Wool tapestry, 'Town of San Sebastian'

Set in a verdant valley in the shadow of mighty Andean peaks, the church of San Sebastian raises white spires toward a blue sky. The charming town of San Blas moves to ancestral heartbeats. Set in a verdant valley in the shadow of mighty Andean peaks, the church of San Sebastian raises white spires toward a blue sky. The charming town of San Blas moves to ancestral heartbeats. Wilfredo Paucar portrays this corner of his native land in a tapestry, woven of soft sheep wool and cotton (90%/10%). Using a traditional handloom, Paucar carries on a regional handicraft learned from his father, a renowned weaver himself. The blend of organic and industrial colors affords an amazing clarity to the tapestry.

Wilfredo Paucar Velarde

"I was born on December 8, 1951, in the city of San Pedro de Cajas. I come from a family of artisans. My father was the famous tapestry weaver Santiago Paucar Amara, who won several national prizes, and many of his tapestries went to Europe (Germany, Italy, and France).

"I started working with my father at the age of fourteen and by the time I was seventeen I was very good at weaving. I feel flattered by the fact that my work will be seen by people from all over the world. I hope to sell some and also hope that people enjoy them and share their feelings towards my work with their relatives or friends. Many thanks to my Novica friends for giving me this opportunity."
