Wool tapestry, 'Rain with Sun'

Orange clouds shaped like Wari glyphs unfold over a black ground in an impressive display of weaving mastery. "I wanted to capture the type of light that shines after a storm," explains Faustino Flores, a Carta Association featured artist. "That's why I called this piece 'Chirapa,' the Quechua term that literally means 'rain with sun.'" The wool tapestry is woven on a traditional loom to preserve Ayacucho's textile heritage.

Carta Association was formed in November of 2005 with the purpose of preserving and promoting Ayacucho's textile legacy. Carta Association includes the region's best weavers grouped in nine sub-organizations located in the city's cardinal points. In all, 120 families form Carta Association.

The principle behind Carta Association is community work so weavers may work together and help each other to make their products more competitive, improve quality, and guarantee their families' wellbeing.
