Women's batik robe, 'Red Passion'

Women's batik robe, 'Red Passion'

Silhouetted on crimson, delicate hibiscus flowers evoke thoughts of the tropics. They show the tonal variations of batik. Nyoman Nadri fashions this graceful robe with a flattering front-wrap style, wide sleeves and matching belt.

Batik is a fabric art in which the cloth is stretched on a wooden frame and the design sketched with a pencil. Then a mixture of melted wax is painted by hand onto areas where color is not desired. When the fabric is crumpled into the dying solution, the wax cracks, creating an attractive network of fine lines. The wax is removed and the process is repeated for each color utilized. Finally, the cloth is washed and rinsed to remove any excess dye.

100% rayon. Wash by hand in cool water, or machine wash with delicate cycle and cold water. Avoid drying in direct sunlight. One size fits all.

Nyoman Nadri

A mother of three children, Ni Nyoman Nadri was born on May 2, 1965. She is an artisan of bed covers, pillowcases, sarongs, shawls, and many other textile arts. She started her career in embroidery in 1987, taking orders to make pillowcases and bags from 1989 until 1992. In 1995, she turned to batik when she learned it from a friend. She has worked hard for years to become as skilled as she is now – to have an art shop and people working with her had never come to mind before. A tremendously creative woman, she creates imaginative patchwork while watching her art shop.

In doing her work, Nadri is inspired by people's needs. Her customers come to her and request the kind of motifs they desire, and bed cover or sarong sizes they need. She hopes that through Novica's promotion her works will expand. Then she can help more people by asking them to work with her and earn money for their living expenses, because she realizes it is currently difficult to find a job.

Customer Reviews of Nyoman Nadri

I love my Jungle Waves robe! I was concerned about the fit -- I'm a 2X -- and it's ample enough to go around and tie nicely. I paid close attention to the measurements of all Nyoman's items, and the...
