Village Artists

Bali is known worldwide for its rich artistic heritage. Near Ubud, the artistic community and cultural center of Bali, a group of artists got together to perfect their art by applying their talent to painting on clothing items. Village Artists create unique items of wearable art as they draw and paint their designs by hand on each garment.

The young men and women of Village Artists have varied backgrounds in art. Many of them started painting because their parents or other family members were artists, so they picked up their paintbrushes at a young age. Later, they discovered a particular talent for drawing or applying color to the canvas. Most were having a difficult time trying to sell their own paintings and had no jobs. The terrorist attacks in Bali left them without a tourist market in which to promote their canvases. They were in dire need of jobs to provide for their families.

The Village Artists work six hours a day in a pleasant, newly constructed open air pavilion, with bamboo blinds on the sides to protect them from the rain when needed. Their patterns are inspired by Bali's lush flora and their exotic colors.
