Irene Benavides was born in Lima on February 21st, 1945. She considers herself to be an innate textile artisan: "This activity was born with me," she tells us. Benavides explains that her art requires meticulous care, serenity and happiness - after all, she's been dedicated to weaving for over 20 years. She is moved by a desire to transmit her beloved Peruvian legacies.
Benavides works with alpaca wool principally, and in a variety of weaving, knitting, crochet and embroidery techniques.
"My biggest challenges have been guiding my own children in the hopes they will follow in the family footsteps," confides Benavides. "When a person acquires one of my sweaters, there's the assurance it is a completely hand-crafted item, product of hard work and dedication."
